Wake up with me, it gets lonely while your sleeping

Wake Up With Me marked my first experience as a curator, and it was shaped by a deep fascination with the transformative potential of materials and their ability to convey meaning that transcends their physicality. My aim was to select artists who demonstrate a profound vulnerability in their work—artists who surprise and move the audience through their innovative approaches to materiality and storytelling.

Each of the chosen artists brought a distinct voice to the exhibition, contributing to a shared exploration of consciousness, connection, and the delicate balance between intimacy and separation.

Tommy Smits presented evocative photography imprinted in concrete, blending the ephemeral nature of the image with the permanence and weight of the material. This juxtaposition invited viewers to reflect on memory and the interplay between fragility and endurance.

Nefo Zhang contributed a sound instrument, an interactive piece that enveloped the space with ethereal tones. Her work explored the relationship between the audience and sound, creating a meditative auditory experience that resonated with the theme of heightened awareness and the boundaries between perception and reality.

Carolina Ovando’s contributions included a video installation and a tapestry depicting the Star Tarot card. The tapestry, a symbol of hope, guidance, and introspection, anchored the exhibition in the mystical and metaphysical, while the video added a dynamic narrative element, weaving personal and cosmic themes together.

Collaborating
with Katya Quel, I created a large-scale installation that became the exhibition’s centerpiece. This immersive piece embodied the essence of the title, Wake Up With Me, and the exhibition’s central concept: the profound sense of separation that often accompanies elevated consciousness. The installation invited visitors to confront the complexities of awakening—a state that offers clarity but can also isolate.
